Substance Use Disorder (SUD) recovery organizations are increasingly integrating sports-based interventions into their programs. However, the effectiveness of these interventions remains under-researched, as there is a lack of evidence-based practices in this field. Notably, no comprehensive studies have been conducted on the role of sports-based interventions in facilitating behavioral change in SUD recovery. Furthermore, health professionals working in this domain often lack the requisite knowledge and skills to design and implement such interventions effectively. Findings from the RTS+ project underscore this gap, highlighting the urgent need for specialized training to address these deficiencies.

The RACE4LIFE Capacity Building program seeks to address this gap by equipping health professionals with the expertise to develop and implement tailored sports-based behavioral change interventions for individuals in SUD recovery. A key component of this initiative is the RACE4LIFE e-platform, a training tool designed to enhance the skills, knowledge, and effectiveness of mental health and sports professionals engaged in SUD recovery programs.

The e-platform is structured into two main parts. The first part provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding SUD recovery and behavioral change interventions. It introduces models, strategies, and techniques applicable in sports and physical activity contexts, synthesizes evidence on the effectiveness of such interventions, and outlines theories relevant to designing sports-based programs. Additionally, it emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of sports participation in promoting physical, mental, and social well-being, as well as fostering life skills and personal development. These principles are conveyed through an experiential learning approach to ensure practical applicability.

The second part of the e-platform focuses on the RACE4LIFE Sport-Based Behaviour Change Protocol specifically designed for individuals in SUD recovery. This protocol provides a structured framework for delivering tailored sports-based interventions and offers practical guidance to mental health and sports professionals. By equipping practitioners with the tools to implement effective interventions, the platform aims to support this vulnerable population in achieving sustainable recovery outcomes
